What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce healthy hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is essential for carrying oxygen in the blood, and a deficiency can lead to severe anemia and iron overload,Thalassemia can cause bone marrow expansion, leading to bone deformities, especially in the face and skull.

Why Does It Happen?

halassemia is caused by mutations in the DNA of cells that make hemoglobin, and these are passed from parents to children. In Thalassemia patient’s body produces insufficient or abnormal forms of hemoglobin. Thalassemia results in the destruction of a large number of red blood cells, which causes the patient to become anemic.

How Can It Be Cured?

While there’s no complete cure for thalassemia, treatments like regular blood transfusions, iron chelation therapy, bone marrow transplants, and emerging gene therapy options help manage the condition and improve patients’ quality of life. Early diagnosis and continuous medical care are essential for effectively managing thalassemia.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of treating thalassemia can be significant, including expenses for regular blood transfusions, medications, and specialized treatments. At Sampark Thalassemia Support Service, we are committed to providing these essential services free of cost to all our beneficiaries, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of receiving life-saving care.
